Introducing Rolling and Calendar TRIR & DART Rate Dashboards

Dakota’s Incident Management application has long included a dashboard which plots key OSHA statistics month-by-month for the calendar year. In response to client feedback, Dakota has developed a new standard dashboard which which provides alternative options for viewing this data.

This new approach displays a 12-month window, compared to the 24 months which were displayed on the month-by-month chart, and offers two variants, easily selected by clicking on the dropdown in the upper right corner. For those who prefer the former approach, the original dashboard remains available.

Why the change? Per long-standing OSHA guidelines, succinctly clarified in an interpretation letter published in 2016, the Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and the Days Away, Restricted Duty, and Job Transfer (DART) Rate are normalized against a hypothetical company with 100 full-time employees working 40 hours per week and 50 weeks a year. Thus, our first consideration was simply one of apples-to-apples: the best calculations would cover a one year period. One of the side benefits of such yearly calculations is that they eliminate some of the extreme variability possible with month-by-month calculations.

This brings us to why there are two variants. While a yearly calculation is desirable, our clients use two definitions for a “year”. Most of our clients prefer a 12-month rolling statistic, so that every calculation equates to a year-long statistic. But a few of our clients pointed to the fact that OSHA bases all of its injury statistics on the calendar year, so these statistics should therefore reset every January. Whichever approach you prefer, simply select your data, click on the dashboard, and use the dropdown to select either “Rolling” or “Calendar” to display the data. A separate dropdown updates the data table below the chart.
