Universal Waste

This 30-minute course discusses the types of hazardous materials that are considered to be "universal waste," and how to handle and dispose of them according to the EPA Universal Waste Regulation. Topics covered include:

  • The types of materials that are considered to be "universal waste"
  • Procedures for handling and transporting universal waste items
  • How to store, handle and dispose of universal waste materials safely
  • The regulatory requirements for working with and disposing of universal waste

The Micro-Learning curriculum includes the following five 3-5 minute courses:

  • "The 'Basics'"
  • "Batteries”
  • "Pesticides"
  • "Mercury-Containing Equipment"
  • “Lamps”
  • "Aerosol Cans"

Associated Regulations

The federal universal waste regulations are found in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) in part 273 and apply to five types of universal waste:

  • Batteries - 40 CFR section 273.9, 40 CFR part 266 subpart G, 40 CFR section 273.2
  • Pesticides - 40 CFR part 273.9, 40 CFR 262.70, 40 CFR section 273.3
  • Mercury-Containing Equipment - 40 CFR part 273.9, 40 CFR section 273.4
  • Lamps - 40 CFR part 273.9, 40 CFR 273.5
  • Aerosol Cans - 40 CFR section 273.9, 40 CFR part 261 subpart C, 40 CFR part 261 subpart D, 40 CFR 261.7, 40 CFR 273.6
