Amendments to the Natural Gas Plastic Piping Regulations

Action Forcing Change
Summary: PHMSA is amending the natural and other gas pipeline safety regulations (49 CFR 192) to address regulatory requirements involving plastic piping systems used in the transportation of natural and other gas. The amendments include new standards for risers, more stringent standards for plastic fittings and joints, stronger mechanical fitting requirements, qualifications for joining plastic pipes, and regulations for the installation of plastic pipe. Additionally, the final rule increases the design factor of polyethylene pipe, increases the maximum pressure and diameter for Polyamid-11 pipe, and allows the use of Polyamide-12 pipe.
